I heard an interesting little story on NPR's Morning Edition today: Slouching Not So Bad After All?

Using an MRI, Researchers studied three sitting positions. The best one is leaning way back, at a 135 degree angle, like you would on a lazy-boy. In the middle: hunching over. And the worst position for your back? Sitting upright at a 90-degree angle.

Hooray, science! I've already set the driver's seat in my car to conform to this new finding. I'm now interested in figuring out what can be done regarding my chosen profession of using a computer 8+ hours a day, but I don't lean forward in my chair as much as I used to in general, so that's good :)

Of course, NPR's website could do a little more than just post the transcript of what the anchor said on the radio program.

Google News to the rescue! Here's some more information from UPI:

Dr. Waseem Amir Bashir, who led the study at Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen, Scotland, said at the meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago sitting with a straight back and thighs parallel to the floor increases the stress on the lower back's lumbar discs, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday.
